Ellen Gray: Pinkett Smith sees new show as entree to filmmaking

By Ellen Gray

ACTRESSES OF a certain age have been discovering TV - particularly cable TV - for the past few seasons. Each has her reasons.

As Jada Pinkett Smith, 37, returns to series television this week for the first regular gig since "A Different World," there's more on her mind than acting.

Yes, she's enthusiastic about TNT's "HawthoRNe," in which she stars as Christina Hawthorne, the chief nursing officer of a Richmond, Va., hospital.

But what the actress, singer and wife of Overbrook's Will Smith really wants to do is direct. And write. And produce.

"I really liked the material, I really loved the world" created by executive producer John Masius ("Providence"), Pinkett Smith said in a recent phone interview.

But there was "also the fact that television would give me a place where I could really learn the mechanics of story structure, scene structure, really sharpen my producerial skills. It just seemed like the perfect place that I needed to be right now," she said, to get ready for "the next phase of my career."

That phase would seem to be well under way.

"The Human Contract," a film she wrote, directed and co-starred in, debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2008 and is expected to be released soon, she said.

She's also working with Smith, she said, on producing the remake of "The Karate Kid" (which reportedly will star their son, Jaden).

Though she laughingly denies having anything resembling a five-year plan, she expects to be working primarily behind the camera "in the next 10 years."

In the meantime, however, there's "HawthoRNe," the second new medical drama this month to focus on nurses rather than doctors. Showtime's "Nurse Jackie" (10:30 tonight) did well enough in last week's premiere to rate a second-season order. A third nursing series, NBC's "Mercy," has been ordered for midseason next year.

Pinkett Smith, whose own mother is a nurse, can't explain television's sudden interest in the profession, but thinks "it's about time."

"We've seen everything we can see, basically, in the medical profession as far as doctors are concerned, I would say, and hospitals are always going to be of interest to us because the two extremes live there, life and death," she said. "It's a very rich area."

"HawthoRNe," like many a medical show since the breakout success of Fox's "House," casts its star as a rebel against a rules-obsessed medical bureaucracy. And though Pinkett Smith's Christina doesn't go quite as far as Edie Falco's "Nurse Jackie" - who flushed a man's ear down a toilet in the show's pilot - her support for both patients and her nurses has her coloring outside the lines in each of the three episodes I've seen.

Masius has also given Christina a complicated backstory. Widowed for a year - her husband died of cancer and was treated in the hospital in which she works - she's the mother of a teenage daughter (Hannah Hodson) and has an uneasy relationship with her former mother-in-law (Joanna Cassidy).

Though there's a sometimes too self-conscious effort to challenge viewers' assumptions about characters they've yet to meet, the one male nurse who's a regular (David Julian Hirsh) happens also to have failed to get into medical school, a plot point that may make some in the profession wince (though perhaps not as much as when Falco flushed that ear).

"People are people and it is important not to make assumptions," Pinkett Smith said.

The actress, who spent time with a chief nursing officer at a hospital in Los Angeles, said "a lot of nurses just felt like they haven't been represented properly [on television]. They're, you know, sexualized . . . not represented in an authentic way."

Paris Hilton looks for a friend in Middle East

By Reuters

LOS ANGELES - Celebrity heiress Paris Hilton is bringing her reality show search for a new best friend to Dubai, where her hard-partying style will be reined in a notch to accommodate Middle East sensibilities, the production company behind the series said on Tuesday.

Production on the latest version of "Paris Hilton's My New BFF" will begin later this month in Dubai and take 17 days, Ish Entertainment said.

As in the U.S. and British versions of the program, the show will revolve around a group of contestants trying to win Hilton's affection and the title of her "best friend forever," or "BFF" to use text-messaging lingo.

"We're very aware we are not making the same show we would make in Los Angeles," said Ish co-founder Michael Hirschorn. Despite the high alcohol content often found in similar reality shows, Hirschorn said that to respect the local mores of Dubai, alcohol may be nixed from the program.

He added that the idea for the show intrigued him.

"I was excited about the sheer, 'Oh my God, what's going to happen' factor," Hirschorn said.

Lions Gate Entertainment Corp will distribute the show internationally, and the program will likely air in Arab countries and possibly in the U.S. on cable channel MTV or on the TV Guide Network, which is owned by Lions Gate. No air date has been set for the show starring Hilton, who has never before been to Dubai.

Hilton, 28, is the daughter of Rick and Kathy Hilton of the Hilton hotel family, and is a favorite of the paparazzi everywhere. Her show "Paris Hilton's My New BFF" began last year on MTV and was soon followed by a British version.

Jessica Simpson plans new reality TV show 'The Price of Beauty'

By Cristina Everett

Jessica Simpson is coming to a television set near you.

The singer, who has repeatedly faced public scrutiny for her fluctuating weight, has reportedly visited TV networks to pitch a reality series titled “The Price of Beauty.”

The show will be based on society’s outlook of women’s bodies, Us Weekly reports in its upcoming issue.

"She and a friend set off on a road trip around the world in search of what people find beautiful and why," says a source.

Simpson, whose first attempt at reality television was with ex-husband Nick Lachey on MTV’s “Newlyweds,” will be working closely with the show.

The 28-year-old will even try some of the "shocking things that women do to make themselves beautiful. Picture 'Fear Factor.'"

The singer's rep tells Us, "Jessica is indeed working on a new show, but network details have not been finalized at this time."

How will 'Jon & Kate' deal with their marital fate? Gosselin family addresses cracks in marriage

By Richard Huff

TLC launches its new season of "Jon & Kate Plus 8" Monday at 9, and how it handles the couple's marital problems on-air could make or break the show. Promos pitch Monday's show as the first time Jon and Kate Gosselin come together face-to-face since they've gone public with their troubled marriage.

"They're now in a really interesting position," said Syracuse University Professor Robert Thompson, who heads the school's Center for Popular Culture. "They're in the news, people are talking about them, and there's a story surrounding them that's got some real buzz other than having a litter of children."

But there's risks with that, too. Since it launched, "Jon & Kate Plus 8" has been a show that draws families because it focused on the daily lives of the couple and their eight kids - and everything from poop to parties. Now, however, with Kate admitting to People magazine that she was unsure of their marriage, and Jon being photographed out late with someone other than his wife, the story may change. A promo for Monday's show includes the couple's sextuplets' fifth birthday party, and clips of Jon and Kate, looking a bit beleaugered, doing rare interviews alone.

"The world isn't about ratings, and TV," Jon says. "It's about happiness and love, family and God. I think we all get caught up in everything. Too much of anything is bad. Because I love my kids, and I love my family, and that's what it is. Kate and I, obviously, have been going through a lot of stuff. And discussing what's best for our kids ... what do we say in the beginning \[of the show\], it's a crazy life, but it's our life."

Therein lies the challenge, though. Because of the troubles in their marriage, and the tabloid tales following them, the audience potential for Monday's show is enormous. Perhaps the biggest ever for a show that generated its largest audience with the fourth-season finale, when the scandal was just surfacing.

In the finale, which was watched by 4.6 million people, the couple discussed the challenges that being on TV presented and how Jon was having trouble with a loss of privacy. TLC won't discuss the show beyond a prepared statement saying production on season five was moving foward, and the network was supporting the family through this challenging time.

"This show has always been about a real family dealing with real-life situations, and that will continue to be the case for the new season," the network said.

The risk, Thompson said, is if the show gets too much into the personal problems, it could turn off families watching together. "It goes from being a [show] about cute kids," he said, "and makes it into 'Knots Landing.'"

Woman Who Choked Cowell’s Ex Was Getting Revenge For Abdul

By RollingStone - May 21, 2009

As Rock Daily reported yesterday, American Idol judge Simon Cowell’s ex-girlfriend Terri Seymour was assaulted following Tuesday night’s performance show. Now the 33-year-old woman who choked Seymour is speaking to Radar Online from jail — and reveals the motive behind her attack was revenge for Paula Abdul.

Janice Thibodeaux tells Radar Online, “I wasn’t cool with Simon Cowell choking Paula Abdul on the show last week and with her crying-out ‘help’ as he did so,” referring to Cowell mock-attacking Abdul during judging. ”Nobody said anything about that so I wanted to confront him about it because that is not appropriate behavior, is it?” Thibodeaux also claimed she was a former security guard at AI and bought a ticket to attend the Tuesday showdown between Adam Lambert and Kris Allen. When she saw Seymour in the crowd, Thibodeaux decided to confront her instead of Cowell.

“She was taking some photographs with her camera and I knew she was his girlfriend so I went up to her to tell her how I felt. We started arguing and then I put my hands around her neck and started choking her just like Simon had done with Paula,” Thibodeaux explained. “Then I walked away and I was tackled by the police but I don’t regret what I did because of what Simon did to Paula, nobody seemed to care about that.” Thibodeaux is being held on $52,000 and has not yet consulted an attorney.

This isn’t the first time Idol has run into trouble with a viewer. In November 2008, an obsessed fan of Abdul’s named Paula Goodspeed died of a drug overdose in front of Abdul’s Los Angeles home. Goodspeed previously auditioned, and was rejected, from American Idol in 2006. Prior to the audition, Goodspeed had stalked and written to Abdul for 18 years, a fact overlooked by producers when they allowed Goodspeed to audition in front of her on idol.

Eminem puts on free concert in Detroit

DETROIT — Eminem has given hundreds of hometown fans in Detroit extra reason to celebrate his first new album in almost five years — a free show.

Spokesman Dennis Dennehy says Eminem performed eight songs. The set was largely new, except for "Lose Yourself" from the film "8 Mile."

The show comes after Eminem and Jimmy Kimmel flew about 200 laid-off auto workers to Los Angeles for the rapper's Friday appearance on Kimmel's TV show. "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" also plans to feature Eminem on Tuesday and Friday.

Kris Allen to win 'American Idol,' but Adam Lambert has best career?

Los Angeles Times - May 17, 2009

Virtually all of the alleged "American Idol" "experts" have consistently underestimated Kris Allen while ballyhooing Adam Lambert as the inevitable champ. What if Kris Allen surprises again?

Romantically speaking, Allen is more of a heartthrob type. He may have a much bigger, secret fan base among the gum-snapping girls who set off tsunamis of text and phone votes that decide winners each week. Furthermore, Lambert likes to jump off cliffs, creatively speaking. What if he goes splat during the final face-off?

When Gold Derby polled readers, asking who -- Lambert or Allen -- will end up winning the most showbiz awards during their future careers, regardless of who wins "American Idol," Lambert stomped. He scored 73% of the votes. But will that prove to be true?

Again, that view may just be a reflection of bossy assumptions pushed by the "Idol" judges and producers. Lambert's mysterious sexuality may be a turn-off among music-buyers, who may gobble up more CDs from the more macho Allen. That could give Allen a vastly larger fan base and a much bigger, longer career during which he could win lots more industry awards.

Allen, for example, seems to have a lot in common with Rob Thomas and John Mayer: clean, rugged good looks and solid singing chops. Thomas and Mayer have won gads of top kudos, including two of Grammy's highest honors. Thomas won record and song of the year with Santana for "Smooth" (1999) and Mayer won best song for "Daughters" (2004).

Andrew Lloyd Webber eyes future for Susan Boyle

CNN - May 17, 2009

She "dreamed a dream" on the TV show "Britain's Got Talent," but could Susan Boyle be living that dream as the star of a West End show?
It's a possibility, according to a spokeswoman for Andrew Lloyd Webber, the award-winning composer and producer of more than a dozen musicals including "The Phantom of the Opera" and "Cats."
Lloyd Webber recently bumped into Simon Cowell, the music and TV producer behind "Britain's Got Talent" and "American Idol," and "discussions took place" about future possibilities for Boyle, said the spokeswoman.

"He's an admirer of her talent," she said. "There's certainly been no firm offer made (but) discussions about Susan have been had."

The 47-year old from West Lothian in Scotland, who revealed she had "never been kissed," surprised the audience and judges when she belted out the classic "I Dreamed a Dream" from the musical "Les Miserables."

The performance was a hit on YouTube and made her famous around the world. The Sun newspaper in Britain reported last Friday that Webber offered Boyle a role in London's West End, but the spokeswoman said that is inaccurate and that no offer has been made.
"She's a great fan of my shows," Lloyd Webber was quoted as saying to The Sun. "If she wanted to be in one, well, it could happen. It would have to be the right role. Maybe I know what it could be, but I'm not telling. She's got a great future.”

Jamie Foxx picks Adam to win ‘Idol’

‘That Kris dude, I guarantee you, he’s got something special,’ Foxx also said

Access Hollywood - May 15, 2009

As Kris Allen and Adam Lambert prepare for their head-to-head battle in the “American Idol” finale, Jamie Foxx said he already knows the name of the winner.

“Kradam! That’s both of them,” Foxx joked with Access Hollywood’s Nancy O’Dell. “Adamis!”

Joking aside, Foxx — who got a chance to work with each of the finalists as one of this season’s special guest mentors – said he thinks the title of “Idol” will go to the man who has been the frontrunner most of the season.

“Adam is gonna win, I believe,” Foxx admitted.

However, the Oscar winner and platinum-selling artist said he sees nothing but big things ahead for Allen.

“For me, this is my opinion, that Kris dude, I guarantee you, he’s got something special,” Foxx said. “And if you notice, most of the people that don’t win usually end up with crazy careers.”

In fact, if Allen is looking for anyone to duet with, Foxx told the aspiring singer he’s ready.

“I told him. I said, ‘I’ll do it right here with you,’” the actor recalled of his mentoring session with Allen. “Because the way his nuance is, he’s not trying to win the contest — he was just giving you the real thing.”

“He sang something and he looked in my eyes, I was like, ‘Oh man!’ you know. It was crazy. I said, ‘Dude, you got something.’”

And while he was clearly impressed with Allen’s singing chops, he did offer some advice to the “Idol” hopeful.

“I asked Kris what he wanted to do. He said, ‘I want to do pop music.’ And I told him there is no such thing as pop music,” Foxx continued. “You do the music from your soul and then you hope it becomes popular.”

The new “American Idol” will be crowned on May 20.

"Dollhouse," will be renewed for the 2009-10 season

By April MacIntyre - May 16, 2009

Prior to their upfront presentation on Monday, FOX has announced that the oddball sci-fi tinged drama, showrunner Joss Whedon's "Dollhouse," will be renewed for the 2009-10 season.

FOX revealed that "Dollhouse" scored a 13-episode order and will hold to the Friday night slot. The show stars Whedon muse Eliza Dushku, and has received mixed reviews and modest ratings. Dushku plays Echo, who has a sketchy, obscure past and no present day life, save for her work in the Dollhouse. She is a malleable "Active" controlled puppet-like without a real memory or a stable consciousness.

Echo is a brainwashed moldable tool at the mercy of a snarky computer nerd with "higher ups" who whore out the fetching blank slate to rich clients, who order up what they want her to be.

Additionally FOX announced that the comedy series "Brothers," will star former NFL player and "Fox NFL Sunday" commentator Michael Strahan as a former NFL star who leaves the Big Apple to return to his Houston hometown in an effort to reconnect with his disabled brother and get his own life back on track.

Daryl "Chill" Mitchell, Colton Dunn and Carl Weathers also star.

‘Grey’s’ Wins Ratings

By BENJAMIN TOFF; Compiled by DAVE ITZKOFF - May 15, 2009

The ambiguous season finale of “Grey’s Anatomy,” in which Dr. George O’Malley (played by T. R. Knight) and Dr. Isobel Stevens (Katherine Heigl) were left for dead — he, after being hit by a bus; she, after surgery for a brain tumor — earned Thursday’s largest television audience. According to Nielsen’s estimates, the episode, on ABC, was watched by 16.4 million viewers, the best showing for “Grey’s Anatomy” since its September premiere. ABC also averaged the most viewers for the night, and CBS came in second with “Survivor” (12 million), “CSI” (14.4 million) and “CSI: NY” (12.8 million). Fox was third with “Bones” (8.7 million) and “Hell’s Kitchen” (7.4 million). No one was killed on the finales of NBC’s shows “The Office” (6.8 million) and “30 Rock” (5.7 million), as the network placed fourth.

Dancing with the Stars: Down to the Final Three

Buddy TV - May 14, 2009

Cowboy Ty Murray finally rode off into the sunset after 10 weeks and several close calls on Dancing with the Stars, still proving to some extent that skills (and not a solid fan base) will keep you in the game. And then there were three. Gilles Marini, Shawn Johnson and Melissa Rycroft. They all have proven themselves worthy of the judges' praises, and they're all winners in their own right. But in the end, only one can bring home the coveted mirror ball trophy.

Personally, I'm rooting for Gilles though he wasn't my first choice when ABC revealed the show's season 8 cast. I actually liked Lil' Kim and Shawn initially (and I still do) but somehow Gilles emerged as a low profile underdog among a cluster of celebrities with a bunch of accolades attached to their names and he blew everyone by surprise with his captivating stage presence and flawless execution. Heck, he might as well be a professional dancer!

But it's still anybody's game and if there's one thing I learned from Dancing with the Stars, it's don't assume. I was so sure that Ty Murray and Chelsie Hightower would be eliminated in week 9. But Lil' Kim and partner Derek Hough, whom I thought would be in the final three, got the boot instead. Perhaps no one is really safe in the game and even the front runners can go home if fans don't vote because they assume that their favorite players are already secure for the finals.

This week's performance actually proved to be a close fight. While Gilles got a 60 (a perfect 30 in both the Latin and the Ballroom round), Melissa and Shawn respectively earned a total of 55 and 56. And based our polls, 22 percent of BuddyTV readers claimed they voted for Gilles, while 22 percent voted for Melissa as well. Shawn got 19 percent of the votes while the remaining percentage either voted for Ty or didn't vote at all.

Though Shawn is a great dancer, I'm inclined to believe that it's going to be a battle between Gilles and Melissa. If Melissa wins, it would serve as the sweetest revenge after being dumped by The Bachelor's Jason Mesnick, as well the perfect intro to the new season of The Bachelorette, featuring Jillian Harris, who was also rejected by Mesnick. How do you think will the finale play out?

'American Idol': More judging, less singing!

By Michael Slezak - May 12, 2009

Remember the good old days of American Idol, when Top 3 Night featured nine individual performances? Tonight, though, "the three amigos" were limited to two songs apiece, which allowed the production to focus on the things that really count: Simon and Kara trying to top each other with petulant quips (and with the score at 0-0, it's a draw!); Simon and Paula continuing their grade-school-level flirtation/disgust pas de deux; the Dawg rambling on and on, as though anyone actually cared; and Ryan and Simon coughing up one more fetid homophobic nugget before things move to the Nokia. [West coaster: Beware of SPOILERS!]

Despite the judges' best (worst?) efforts, though, the stars of the night were Adam, Kris, and Danny. Because, as Randy and Simon both reiterated tonight, American Idol is a singing competition, and as Paula would say, we're just here for the music. When it all shook out, nobody exactly tanked, but one puppy-eyed crooner covered Kanye West, and proved great risks can yield great rewards. (Yes, Kris, I surrender: I will buy your record the day it comes out.) One glam-rock belter served vocals so huge, they may cause potential tidal waves on remote Pacific islands over the next 24 hours. (Note that Simon begged his fan base not to get complacent; Mom, are you voting?) And one goofy Wisconsin dude tackled a song that former Idol champ Taylor Hicks covered during Top 3 week in season 5, and his reboot did not match up. I know the smart money is probably on an Adam-Danny finale, but my crazy/sentimental/optimistic bucks say it's gonna be Adam-Kris. How about you?

Post your thoughts about tonight's show below, and as for me, well,I'll be back in the early a.m. with my full TV Watch recap. In the meantime, don't forget to make your pick in the EW.com Idol Prediction Challenge! Oh, and a word of warning: There won't be an On the Scene at Idol report on PopWatch tomorrow morning, but fret not: Adam B. Vary will be in the Idoldome for results night on Wednesday, and back with his usual brand of jaunty on Thursday morning.

Ty Murray eliminated from `Dancing With the Stars'

By SANDY COHEN - May 13, 2009

LOS ANGELES — The King of the Cowboys has left the ballroom.

After weeks of less-than-stellar scores, rodeo champ Ty Murray was eliminated from "Dancing With the Stars."

The 39-year-old bull rider came into Tuesday's semifinal results show in last place with 48 points out of 60.

"We might be at the bottom this week, but week one we were the 13th-worst couple," Murray joked of his unlikely success in the ABC dance-off.

The nine-time world champion rodeo cowboy joined the hit show with wife Jewel, who was sidelined by an injury before the competition began. Alongside professional partner Chelsie Hightower, Murray plodded ahead with stiff hips and a positive attitude that moved fans to bring him back week after week. Judges praised Murray for his hard work and can-do approach.

"If the others have climbed hills, you've climbed mountains," head judge Len Goodman said Tuesday. "With that dedication and work ethic, you've been a credit to everyone on the show."

On Monday, judge Carrie Ann Inaba named Murray "the most valuable player of season eight."

The lovable cowboy said he knew dancing would be "a giant stretch" but that he approached it with the same vigor he does bull riding. "There's not one ounce of quit in this entire body," he said Monday.

The ballroom audience rose to its feet to bid Murray farewell Tuesday. He smiled, saying he has "a whole new respect" for dancing. He also thanked his partner.

"Teaching me to dance is like trying to teach a blind guy to paint," Murray quipped.

Tuesday's results show also included a performance by Raphael Saadiq and the continuation of the new professional dance competition: Two pro dancers are vying for viewer votes and a spot on the next season of "Dancing With the Stars," slated to begin in September.

Actor Gilles Marini, Olympian Shawn Johnson and "The Bachelor" reject Melissa Rycroft will compete for the mirrorball trophy on Monday.

A new "Dancing" champ will be crowned May 19.

For Ultrareality, ‘Housewives’ Turns to Jersey Girls

By Alessandra Stanley - May 11, 2009

All the other housewives, those passels of pampered, primping, social-climbing, Botox-injecting spendthrifts in Orange County, Atlanta and New York, are not the real thing.

All those McMansions, swimming pools, boutiques, charity auctions and spa splurges have been merely rehearsals, introductory rounds leading to the apotheosis of the Bravo “Real Housewives” franchise, “The Real Housewives of New Jersey.”

The New Jersey housewives are more real and more riveting than their predecessors because, well, they are from New Jersey, and also because they so closely mirror the make-believe characters in “The Sopranos.”

The best reality shows look like fiction.
