Putting The Great Game on stage

By Mike Wooldridge
World Affairs Correspondent

Sunday, 12 April 2009

A London theatre is hosting a two-month festival aimed at giving audiences a better understanding of the culture and history of a country rising ever higher up the global news agenda - Afghanistan.

The Great Game - taking its title from the nineteenth century power scramble for domination and influence in Afghanistan - brings plays, films, talks and exhibitions to London's Tricycle Theatre, a venue known for tackling for political issues.

Ordinary people

The Tricycle, under director Nicholas Kent, takes the view that Afghanistan is likely to be the most important focus of British, European and American foreign policy for at least the rest of this decade.

It hopes audiences will learn more about how the policy has evolved and how lessons from the past could be used for more informed action in the future. Ramon Tikarm and Danny Rahim feature in the festivalThe theatre has had advice from experts on Afghanistan - its contemporary politics, as well as its history - in devising the festival's offerings. One lesson from history, in Nicholas Kent's view, is the need to do more to empower ordinary people in Afghanistan.

Jemima Rooper, one of the younger actors involved in the festival, says she has concluded from working on the plays that people jump too readily to cast Afghans into "the bad guys" and "the good guys". She says it is important for her generation to understand Afghanistan better. With plays on Darfur and Guantanamo behind him, Nicholas Kent says he thinks theatre should get involved in politics.

"We should be making people think about an issue," he says, "and that is what this Afghanistan festival is also attempting to do."

The secret behind Kylie's glowing skin

ANI

12 Apr, 2009

Kylie Minogue reportedly shelled 40,000 pounds on treating herself at beauty spa holidays and getting Botox injections to be in the glowing skin she is today.

The Aussie singer had allegedly rejuvenated her layers in the last six months with two, seven-night breaks at Spain’s SHA Wellness Clinic. The 40-year-old purportedly indulged in a variety of health treatments and ‘Integral Facial Rejuvenation’ package, priced around 3,000 pounds, to repair the effects left by her cancer in 2005.

"This wasn’t a cheap break,” News of the World quoted a clinic source as saying.

“The package alone cost 3,000 pounds and the presidential suite costs 5,400 pounds a night. It is not cosmetic surgery but the effects are amazing," the source added. She had six months of chemotherapy after her cancer was diagnosed and this clinic not only allows her to hide away so she can have beauty treatments but also makes sure her body is healthy too. "She had lots of massages and hydrotherapy treatments, but Kylie was there for the macrobiotic food and rejuvenation therapies.”

Gwen Davies, non surgical specialist from Transform Cosmetic Surgery, added: "To the trained eye it’s clear she’s invested in a range of complementary non-surgical treatments and maybe even one or two surgical procedures."

“Nazrul the Poet”, CD on Nazrul launched

Cultural Correspondent

Sunday, April 12, 2009

The contribution of Kazi Nazrul Islam to our culture and history cannot be overstated. His poetry with fiery lyrics was a rich source of inspiration to patriots and Freedom Fighters in the struggle against the British Raj as well as IN the Liberation War of 1971.

Despite Nazrul's significant contribution to the nation, only a few initiatives have been taken to preserve the works and times of the National Poet. In a welcome move, on April 10, Nazrul Sangeet Shilpi Parishad (NSSP) in association with Prime Bank Limited, launched a CD on Kazi Nazrul Islam. Titled “Nazrul the Poet” the CD contains a complete biographical account of Nazrul's life. Divided into four main segments -- Biography, Literary Contribution, Other Facets and Image Gallery -- the CD aims at providing Nazrul enthusiasts with a rich perspective on the poet. The launch programme began with a short discussion. Azam. J. Chowdhury, chairman, board of directors, Prime Bank Limited, was chief guest. The special guest was legendary Nazrul artiste Feroza Begum. Among the speakers were Nazrul exponent Asadul Huq; Nazrul artistes Shahin Samad; Sujit Mustafa; M.A. Mannan and Khilkhil Kazi, grand daughter of the great bard.

A power point presentation of the CD was delivered by Dithi Hasnat, one of the main coordinators of the project. To her goes the credit for the content development, story- board development, visualisation, audio editing and research for the CD. The programming of the CD has been done by Kamrul Islam Chowdhury.

The CD was launched by Feroza Begum. A new website for NSSP was also launched at the programme by Azam. J. Chowdhury. The address of the website is www.nazrulssp.org.

A cultural programme followed, with renditions of Nazrul numbers by leading and upcoming Nazrul singers. The programme opened with a choral rendition of the Nazrul numbers -- “Khati shonaar cheyeo khati amar desher mati” and “Joy joy hok” by members of NSSP, followed by solo performances by artistes of the organisation.

Did Sanjay upset Manyata?

By MEENA IYER

April 12, 2009

There is breaking news from Lucknow, the Samajwadi Party stronghold, where party secretary Sanjay Dutt is campaigning for Nafisa Ali — the candidate who replaced him in this constituency after he was denied permission by the Supreme Court to contest the Lok Sabha elections.

Apparently wife Manyata has taken off to the Bahamas in a huff. She is said to be mighty upset that Sanjay refused to let her file her candidature instead, which was the Samajwadi Party’s gameplan originally. Which is intriguing because when Sanjay announced Nafisa’s nomination on television, he had said, “Manyata recommended Nafisa’s name. And the party high command went along with this decision.’’ Now the Bollywood actor is in the thick of campaigning, but Manyata who was by his side in all the rallies earlier, is nowhere in the picture. BT learned from reliable sources in Dutts’s inner circle that Manyata was absolutely keen to contest the elections. “But Sanjay Dutt put his foot down and told her that she should not even consider contesting,’’ said the insider. An argument apparently took place between them following which a livid Manyata flew off to the Bahamas ostensibly to look at some property deal. Dharam Oberoi, Sanjay’s secretary and confidante, confirmed that Manyata went to the Bahamas and is currently in London looking after her textile business interests. But he refused to elaborate on the tension between the couple and said, “I have been instructed by my boss not to entertain the media and I would not like to comment on any matter pertaining to him.”

Meanwhile, BT also learned that though the rivalry between Sanjay and his sister, Congress MP Priya Dutt, may currently be at its peak, the actor has been a generous brother all the while. When their father Sunil Dutt expired in May 2005, he had left all his property in his son Sanjay’s name. A source said, “Sanjay, who was extremely protective about his sisters Namrata and Priya, suggested that the property be shared in equal parts between the three siblings. He actually played very fair with his sisters.’’ A certain amount of tax was levied on the assets when Sunil Dutt’s income tax return was filed after his death, which the Dutts have differences against and arbitration is now on with the authorities concerned.

Abhishek the 'Genda phool' guy!

By TNN

April 12, 2009

Abhishek Bachchan is surely crazy about his song Genda phool from Delhi 6, a film that did little to b(l)oom his career graph.

Anyway, Abhi’s stylish shake to genda... wasn’t overlooked. And full credit for this wonderful choreography, Abhishek insists, goes to “I, me, myself!” he says.

“You see Rakeysh (director Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra) wouldn’t hire a choreographer for this song. Everyone was told that they could do whatever they wanted... So I just went with the flow, and did whatever I wanted... Now that everyone seems to like my dance so much, it’s time I applied for a copyright. Nowadays I call it the AB dance,” he explains. Whenever Abhi gets the opportunity to dance on that number, he makes for a jumpstart. Talk about chance pe dance.

John analyses fans

By TNN

April 12, 2009

John Abraham loves it when fans rush upto him with his photographs and ask him to autograph a few.

The ‘process’, he claims, helps him analyse his journey so far. “You know they have these pictures of me from my modelling days, and then they have my Dostana photographs,” he explains, adding, “And I find that I’ve been so simple all my life — in both my clothes and career! Those pictures make me realise what a simple guy I am, and I love it that way,” says John. But his character in Dostana was far from simple... you know with the hot butt show et al. “Yes, it was! I just put on swimming trunks, and pulled them down a little, simple,” he said quite simply.

Phir nahin Milenge!

By MEENA IYER

April 12, 2009

Are Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor delaying the release of Boney Kapoor’s Shahid Kapoor More Pics Milenge Milenge that was launched when they were a couple in Shahid Kapoor More Pics
2006?

Bollywood sources believe so even though the film, which was launched with much fanfare in New Delhi, made brisk progress in the intervening period. But now, sources allege, both actors are naturally not keen to appear as lovers on screen anymore, and are reportedly trying to stall the film’s release. Boney himself remains optimistic about this Satish Kaushik-directed film that is inspired by the Hollywood hit Serendipity and whose fate reportedly is in the hands of its lead actors. “With the film industry face-off with the multiplexes on, the situation is fluid,” explained Boney, “however, I will release three films, including Milenge Milenge, between June and December.’’ He strongly denied Kareena and Shahid were trying the prevent his film’s release. “She has almost completed her dubbing and he, too, has dubbed some portions and will finish his work shortly,’’ said the producer. Kareena’s secretary Zahid (who, incidentally, was Shahid’s before) confirmed the actress, who is currently busy shooting at nights for Raju Hirani’s Three Idiots, has dubbed certain portions of Milenge Milenge. “She is working on the promotion of Kambakht Ishq and is scheduled to fly overseas for Karan Johar’s Jehaad,’’ he added. Strangely, even a year-and-half after the hit jodi’s break up, Zahid remains curious about Shahid.

A producer said, “Zahid always inquires about the fate of Shahid’s movies. He wants to know the box office status, release dates, etc.’’ However, the secretary explained away his curiosity by saying, “I’m an integral part of the trade. I may have asked general questions about movies and release dates, etc. I’m interested in Kambakht Ishq because it is Kareena’s next release and Love Aaj Kal because it is Saif Ali Khan’s home production. Other than that, I’m not unduly interested in any other actor. I don’t recall asking any questions about Shahid Kapoor specifically.’’

Meanwhile, the couple itself is not above keeping tabs on each other especially when their paths cross at industry functions where they keep their distance, Bollywood sources say. Guests at producer Karim Morani’s 50th birthday party recently reported that Kareena checked out Shahid Kapoor and his new ‘friend’ Priyanka Chopra with unabashed curiosity. But designer Shabina Khan, who is a close friend of the Jab We Met star pair, rubbished this claim saying, “Kareena and Shahid are cordial with each other. Beyond that, I don’t think there is anything.’’

Madonna 'still keen on adoption'

Madonna has told a Malawian newspaper that she wants to ensure the young girl she failed to adopt grows up in "a loving family environment".

Agencies

Sunday, 12 April 2009

A judge rejected the adoption of the girl, four, over residency rules but Madonna's lawyer has lodged an appeal.

The singer wants the chance to provide Chifundo James - whose name translates as Mercy - with a home, education and healthcare, the Nation on Sunday says. The paper said Madonna had responded to questions it submitted in an e-mail. Chifundo is in the same orphanage that previously housed David Banda, Madonna's first adopted child. If the 50-year-old singer's application had been successful, Chifundo would have been a sister to David and her biological children Lourdes and Rocco.

"I want to provide Mercy with a home, a loving family environment and the best education and healthcare possible," the newspaper quotes Madonna as saying.

"And it's my hope that she, like David, will one day return to Malawi and help the people of their country."

Madonna's application was rejected because of a requirement that prospective parents be resident in the southern African state for 18 to 24 months. No date has been set for a court hearing to appeal against the judge's ruling.

"Though I have been advised that I cannot publicly discuss the pending appeal regarding my desire to adopt Mercy, I do want to say how much I appreciate the level of support that I have received from the people of Malawi and my friends around the world," Madonna reportedly said.

The Obama's Dog Has Arrived – at Last!

By Sandra Sobieraj-Westfall

Originally posted Sunday April 12, 2009

Forget about hunting for Easter eggs. The president's daughters have a much better treat in store this holiday weekend: a new dog! After months of anticipation, a 6-month-old Portuguese Water Dog named Bo is now calling the White House home.

First, the name. According to the Washington Post, which published confirmation of the White House dog news Sunday, Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, chose the name because their cousins have a cat named Bo and because Mrs. Obama's father was nicknamed Diddley, as in Bo Diddley. The dog is a gift from Sen. Ted Kennedy, who owns three dogs of the same breed, known for high spirits and said to be a good fit for kids with allergies (such as Malia). Kennedy had been lobbying the Obamas to get a Portuguese Water Dog (or PWD) for months.

Top Secret Meeting

The newspaper reports that the Obama girls are delighted – they've been waiting anxiously since their dad promised them a dog during his presidential campaign – and that the family, first-time dog owners, are still deciding where Bo will sleep and who will walk and feed him. Under a veil of secrecy, the Post reports, Bo actually made a trip to the White House earlier to meet the family. "The Meeting," as it was called by staffers, was a success.

But the highly-orchestrated canine delivery procedure didn't go without a few hitches. First, news began to circulate that a Portuguese Water Dog by the name of Charlie had been selected for the First Family after a Web site called firstdogcharlie.com posted the information, and a photo, Saturday. The White House called the photo "bogus" and told news organizations (including PEOPLE) that the First Dog would make its debut Tuesday – although Bo, it is now apparent, was already at the White House over the weekend.

Dogged by Questions

Then there are the questions about the dog's origins that are sure to bedevil the Administration. The Obamas originally discussed rescuing a dog from a shelter. But valuable and highly-bred PWDs rarely show up at shelters. Bo is said to have lived with a family that decided not to keep him, but that won't likely satisfy animal rescue advocates who wanted the Obamas to take in a stray. To help ease disappointment, according to the Washington Post, the family will make a donation to the District of Columbia Humane Society.

Sun Apr 12, 2009

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Walt Disney Co's "Hannah Montana: The Movie" doubled forecasts by earning $34 million worth of tickets at the Easter weekend box office in North America, as young fans of teen starlet Miley Cyrus rushed to see their heroine's first big-screen outing. The movie ranks as the second-best Easter opening, following 2006's "Scary Movie 4" with $40 million.

"Omgomg! my fans rock! the movie is doing great you guys!" Cyrus, 16, said in a Twitter message, using the "omg" acronym as shorthand for "Oh my God."

Disney had hoped "Hannah Montana" would perform in the same range as 2003's "The Lizzie McGuire Movie," another big-screen vehicle for a Disney Channel star, in that case Hilary Duff. "Lizzie" opened to $17.3 million in 2003, and ended its domestic run with $42.7 million.

As in her hit TV series, Cyrus plays a regular schoolgirl by day and a pop star by night. But her father (real-life dad Billy Ray Cyrus) decides she needs to get back to her small-town roots, so takes her on a surprise trip to her old Tennessee home where love and other complications ensue.Last weekend's champion "Fast & Furious" slipped to No. 2 with $28.8 million, taking the 10-day total for Universal Pictures' race-car thriller to $118.0 million. The studio is a unit of General Electric Co's NBC Universal.

DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc's "Monsters vs. Aliens" was down one at No. 3 with $22.6 million in its third weekend; its total rose to $141 million.

Christians celebrate Easter in Jerusalem

By MATTI FRIEDMAN

JERUSALEM (AP), April 12, 2009

Christians prayed at an ancient church and sang in a garden outside the walls of Jerusalem's Old City as they marked Easter Sunday in the city where they believe Jesus was crucified and resurrected.

The city buzzed with religious activity. Orthodox Christians, who observe a different calendar, marked Palm Sunday, and thousands of Jewish worshippers celebrating the Passover festival thronged a plaza opposite the Western Wall for a traditional blessing.Roman Catholics held Mass at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, traditionally believed to mark the site where Jesus was crucified, buried and then resurrected on Easter Sunday. Brown-robed friars marched into the church to the sound of bagpipes, followed by clergymen in purple capes and others bearing crosses.Pilgrims stood by, some filming with small video cameras. The scene outside the church was broadcast to believers worldwide over the Internet by the Florida-based U.S. company IPrayTV.com.

"Words aren't adequate to express how moving it is to be in this place at this time," said Mark Walsh, 48, an auto shop owner from Houston, Texas.

Donna Hayes, a 40-year-old homemaker from Miramar, Florida, said it was a "special feeling to be here, where it all took place."Another group of pilgrims chose to mark Easter Sunday outside the walls of the Old City at the Garden Tomb, which some Protestants sanctify as an alternative site for the last events of Jesus' life.Protestant groups from the U.S., the Philippines and elsewhere gathered at the garden, swaying and singing along with a Christian rock band and listening to a sermon from Peter Wells, who heads the Garden Tomb Association.

"Risen lord Jesus, the lamb upon the throne, we join with all of heaven in declaring your glory," Wells said. "We welcome you to our resurrection garden, and invite you to have your way among us. As we celebrate today, and as we serve you tomorrow, we rejoice that you conquered sin, death and the grave, and that now you reign victorious, forever glorious."

Also Sunday morning, Orthodox priests in black robes and beards and carrying palm fronds filed into the Holy Sepulcher for their Palm Sunday ceremony. The Holy Sepulcher is shared by Catholic, Orthodox and Armenian Christians, along with several smaller sects.Palm Sunday marks the day Jesus entered Jerusalem and was greeted by cheering crowds with palm fronds.
Not far away, in a plaza opposite the 2,000-year-old stones of the Western Wall, Jews gathered for the traditional priestly blessing, a remnant of ritual from the biblical Jewish Temple. The Western Wall, a retaining wall from the Second Temple, is the holiest site where Jews can pray.

Covered in white prayer shawls, descendants of the Temple's priestly class blessed the assembled worshippers: "May God lift his countenance upon you and may he give you peace."
